The reason that matters for a resident is scheduling. Nippers is closed on Tuesdays, and everything else on the island bends around that.
Nippers is open every day from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM except Tuesdays, on Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 8:00 PM, and the kitchen runs the same 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM window. The indoor air-conditioned room, Overso, keeps the same hours, and the gift shop opens 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Nippers gets the postcards. Grabbers gets the sunset. Great Guana is small but notorious for its five-mile white sand beach and the lively Grabbers, a quintessential island hopping stop in The Abacos. Grabbers sits on the harbour side, which is the correct geometry for a cay whose beach bar faces east. The routine most residents settle into looks something like this: Nippers for the afternoon on the Atlantic, then a slow drift back across the ridge to Grabbers in time for the sun to drop behind the mainland.

Only about 100 full-time residents live on 7-mile-long Great Guana Cay, and the island holds a couple of small, laid-back resorts along with a restaurant-bar with one of the best party scenes in the Abacos. Take away the day-trippers who came specifically for Nippers and the beach empties out.
A Tuesday well spent tends to look like this:
- Morning coffee at home, then a long walk from the settlement toward Baker's Bay along the ocean side.
- Lunch at Grabbers, which keeps its own schedule and often draws the crowd that would otherwise be at Nippers.

Anchorage space at Fisher Bay tightens, the ferry runs are heavier, and Nippers gets a Saturday-of-the-year kind of crowd rather than its usual Sunday one. Grocery deliveries from Marsh Harbour are worth staging a day early.
The second is the Barefoot Man concert weekend at Nippers, a fixture on the Abaco calendar for so long it has its own choreography. The classic outline still holds. Get to Guana Cay by noon on Friday, because the free concert starts at Nippers around 12:30. Sunday is the traditional day of rest, if "rest" includes another party, as Bahamas-native Brown Tip brings his Rake and Scrape music to Grabbers from 1 pm until sunset, and Nippers still runs its usual Sunday pig roast, so guests feeling adventurous can bar-hop. Cruisers who want a spot in the Fisher Bay anchorage typically arrive a day or two before the concert.
